Merena Louise (Hanson) Brown
1940-2008

Merena Louise Brown, one of thirteen children, was born in Hainesville on March 25, 1940, to Cecil and Jane Hanson. In 1956 she married Marshall Brown of Southampton. After about 10 years in Ontario they returned home to the St. John River Valley where they raised five children, one girl and then four boys in succession.

As a Life Member of the New Brunswick Women's Institute, Merena gave willingly of her time and capabilities. She was a dedicated member of the Southampton WI. Over the years she held various positions in the Branch including president.

Merena was an eager supporter of the Middle Southampton Community Hall, lending a hand for fund-raising projects in whatever capacity necessary. She also sang in the choir at Southampton United Baptist Church.

As mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of a large family, she seldom had free time on her hands; but when she wasn't cooking, cleaning, or babysitting, she liked to knit, quilt, read, play the guitar and have the odd game of cribbage with friends. In later years, Merena and Marshall enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives at their cottage at Scotch Lake, where they spent their summers.

Merena passed away on June 27, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Even during her illness, her wonderful smile shone through; and she remained a great encouragement to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is sadly missed.
