There are nine branches in Loyalist District 1 of the New Brunswick Women's Institute. All of them are located in the St. John River watershed. Like jewels in a necklace they sparkle from Nackawic in the northwest to Lakeville Corner in the southeast. The links to the left reflect this "sparkle". On the executive of the District are President: Sheila Washburn (506-472-3842), V-P: Joan Hunter (506-363-3567), Secretary: Eva Scott (506-575-8206) and Treasurer: Peggy MacKenzie (506-357-3917). We welcome your inquiries about becoming an NBWI member.

When the minutes are available they will give a more accurate and complete account of the 2008 Fall Convention of Loyalist District #1 of the New Brunswick Women's Institute. If you have any corrections on the following interim report, please call or email Sheila Washburn.

Loyalist District 1 of the NBWI held their 79th Fall Convention on October 4, 2008. Thirty-eight WI members attended. The hosting branches were Dumfries, Lower Kingsclear and New Maryland. The meeting was held at St. Clements Anglican Church in Dumfries. This year the business meeting started at 9:30 a.m., a half hour earlier than usual and concluded at 11:30 a.m. Because our theme was "Helping people in crisis", Elizabeth Thurber, Executive Director of Fredericton Community Services, was invited to speak about their various programs, especially the "Food Bank". Then the hosting branches, served a salad lunch, following which the ongoing silent auction was concluded. There was no afternoon session.

The business meeting opened with Lakeville Corner WI presenting the Canadian Flag. After the opening ceremonies, Lower St. Marys WI conducted a memorial service in which Bernetta Jewett of Keswick Ridge WI and Merena Brown of Southampton WI were remembered. Guests included NBWI President Glenna Geer, Area Director Lorna Estey and Loyalist District #2 President Jean Stairs-Logan.

President Glenna and Director Lorna both addressed the meeting. The Provincial Convention will be held the first week in May, 2009 at Villa Madonna in Renforth. The 2009 FWIC Area Meeting will be held in PEI and the 2010 ACWW Area Meeting will be held in Nova Scotia. Great things are being planned for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Women's Institute in 2011.

During Roll Call, each branch chose the name of another branch to entertain before the next fall convention. See the table below to know which branch is entertaining which:

These reports can eventually be found at the link for each branch, to the left. These branches also organized the silent auction that raised almost $200. Of this $100 has already been sent to the WI Home in Woodstock.

Jeanne Kaye Speight of Lower Kingsclear WI spoke briefly on one of the WI founders, Adelaide Hoodless, whose life she has been researching. District President Sheila Washburn (472-3842) of Lower St. Marys WI offered to procure computer lessons for those who had received inexpensive refurbished computers last year. If you want to add your name to the list, please contact her. Sheila will also look into organizing a bus trip for district members.
